The Institute of Marine Science faculty and research staff provide expertise in marine biology, biological oceanography, physical, chemical and geological oceanography.

IMS operates an annual research budget of $5.5 million and publishes an average of 45-50 papers per year on projects as varied as the numerical modeling of the 2004 Indonesian tsunami, the diversity of life in Arctic sea ice and the chemical analysis of sea otter skull tissue.

Researchers at the Institute of Marine Science have been cited over 20,000 times and have contributed over 1200 publications to our knowledge of the world's oceans.
